Some information on La Souterraine, Creuse and the region of Limousin

La Souterraine

La Souterraine is our nearest town. It lies about 5 Kms south of us on the D1. La Souterraine was important in medieval times as it was on the famous Santiago de Compostella pilgrim route, as witnessed today by the golden Coquilles Saint Jacques, or scallop shells, to be seen in the town's pavements. The centre of the old town still retains much from its medieval past: the X1 century church with pre-Roman crypt and bell tower, the Porte Saint Jean and the Porte du Charraud and some ancient houses and buildings.

Part of La Souterraine's importance lies in its central position: right in the middle of two of France's major roads.

But not only is the town historically and geographically important, it also has lots to offer the tourist: restaurants, cafes, shops and supermarkets, an outdoor market, a cinema, a campsite, a lake with beaches.
